Jacksonville was named for General Andrew Jackson, the territory's first military governor. The Timucuan Indians were the actual first "settlers" of this area. Next came the Spanish in 1513 with the arrival of Juan Ponce de Leon. The French came to what is now Jacksonville and built Fort Caroline in 1564. They lost the area only a year later to the Spanish, who built a settlement in St. Augustine. In 1738, just north of St. Augustine, Fort Mose was established as the first community of freed black slaves in the USA. By 1821, Florida became a US Territory and only a year later, at "Cowford" a portion of the St. Johns River where cows were ferried across, Jacksonville was founded, named for Andrew Jackson. By the mid-1800's, Jacksonville was touted as the winter playground for those in the cold northern portions of the country. They called it the "winter city in summerland." Tourists came from all over to take in the warm sunshine and wonderful climate. In 1901 a terrible fire burned 2,368 buildings in the downtown Jacksonville area. Though an awful disaster, it helped the downtown area to renovate and improve the city. Though it experienced the same downturns during the depression of the 1930's as the rest of the country, it also experienced great resilience after World War II. In 1968, the city and county joined together which made the largest city in the contiguous 48 states - geographically. Jacksonville is the largest city in the lower 48 states in the United States with 758.7 square miles. Sitka, Alaska is the largest city in land area overall.
