Fun Minneapolis Facts and Sexy Dating Ideas!

Minneapolis, aka "City of Lakes" "Minneapple" "Mill City" and "Flour City" is the trade center of the Midwest, and the headquarters of the world's largest super-computer and grain distributor. St. Paul is the nation's biggest publisher of calendars and law books. These "twin cities" are the nation's third-largest trucking center.

Though St Paul and Minneapolis have grown up on opposite banks of the Mississippi River, they are quite different cities. The people of St. Paul are of many nationalities, largely German, Irish, Polish and Italian. The capital of Minnesota, St. Paul began as a settlement by the name of "Pig's Eye!" By 1807 this area was selected as the site for Fort Snelling with areas set aside as government reservations.

Minneapolis was ranked in 1998 by Money magazine as the best large Midwestern city in which to live.

Minneapolis was named one of the safest cities in the United States.

Minneapolis features 22 lakes and 170 parks and with the Mississippi River winding through the city.

It wasn't long before many more settlers came into the area, with the government driving them off the protected land more often than not. A group of settlers under the direction of Pierre Parrant - known as "Pig's Eye," moved into a landing area near the Fort. It was named after the group's leader, Parrant. A year later, when Father Lucien Galtier built a chapel to his patron saint, St. Paul, he was able to persuade the people in town to change the name to something a little less flamboyant. Around the same time, another group of soldiers from the Fort had built a saw and flour mill on the same side of the Mississippi, forming a village known as St. Anthony.

It wasn't long before a suspension bridge was built linking St. Anthony and a small village across the Mississippi. These two villages merged to form a larger community named Minneapolis. The name combined "minne," an Indian word for water, with "polis," the Greek word for city. After the Civil War, Minneapolis became the larger of the cities with more industry, due most likely to the water power of St. Anthony Falls. It became a center for flour-milling. St. Paul became an early steamboat terminus with the fur trade of the area as well as travelers and shipping of agricultural goods.

Downtown's Nicollet Mall (a 12-block pedestrian thoroughfare adjacent to conference hotels) is home to more than 400 stores, which translates into more retail outlets in a four-block radius than any other city in the country. Minneapolis ranks fifth in the country in total downtown retail sales, only behind New York City, Los Angeles, Boston, and San Francisco. Suburban Bloomington is home to the largest shopping and entertainment complex in the country- the Mall of America. There is no sales tax on clothing in Minnesota.

All the wonderful downtown shopping areas, along with a multitude of restaurants, hotels, and other attractions, are connected by Minneapolis' famed Skyways, a system of elevated enclosed walkways connecting more than 60 blocks of downtown Minneapolis.

The strength of the local theater community is evident in the more than 100 theater companies and 30 smaller theater venues sprinkled throughout the city.

The Twin Cities is the only metropolitan area in the country to have two world-class orchestras. The Minnesota Orchestra performs at Orchestra Hall in downtown Minneapolis and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra presents concerts at the Ordway. And, in the spirit of all big cities, Minneapolis is also home to the Minnesota Opera and Minnesota Ballet.
