Spokane is located in eastern Washington near the Idaho border and scenic Coeur d'Alene.
Before Europeans arrived in the area, indigenous people gathered here to take advantage of plentiful salmon in the Spokane River. In 1810, the Northwest Company built Spokane House at the intersection of the Spokane and Little Spokane Rivers, creating Washington State's first permanent settlement.

Washington became a state in 1889, and Spokane Falls became simply "Spokane" in 1891. The city grew rapidly in the early twentieth century, and reached over 100,000 residents by 1910.

Spokane was the site of the 1974 World's Fair, held on land renovated from a railroad yard into a 100-acre park that local residents still enjoy.

The Northwest Fur Co. was established in 1810 soon after the Lewis and Clark expedition came through the area. They opened operations alongside the Little Spokane River about 10 miles from what is now Spokane. In 1872, the real beginnings of Spokane came into life at Spokane Falls. Fur trading ceased to be the predominant business of the area with lumber and grain taking over. In 1889 a devastating fire destroyed much of the city. Though a tragedy, the fire spurred the community to build more and better. This development has continued through the years since that time.
